M2 Money Stock includes all currency in circulation (M1 Money Stock) and also various savings vehicles like savings accounts, money market funds and CDs. It is calculated as nominal US GDP divided by the average M2 money stock in the same quarter. Typically during recessionary periods, as individuals shift from consumption to saving, the velocity of M2 money stock decreases as seen in early 2000s and throughout the 2008 financial crisis.
