Bank of Japan Assets tracks the monthly holdings of Japan's Central Bank. Leading up to 2000, the Bank of Japan purchased commercial paper, thus increasing its held assets to increase borrowers' credit, due to the low levels of growth in the economy at the time. Later in 2013, the Bank of Japan began another round of quantitative easing with the aim to promote growth in the economy and raise expected inflation. The Bank of Japan's asset purchase program aimed to encourage a decline in the long-run interest rates, as well as enhance monetary easing. As a consequence of the program, the Bank of Japan's Assets surpassed Japan's nominal GDP in Q2 2018.
