Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., branded as Walmart since 2008 and Wal-Mart before then, is an American multinational retailer corporation that runs chains of large discount department stores and warehouse stores. The company serves customers and members more than 200 million times per week at more than 9,700 retail units under 69 different banners in 28 countries. Walmart was founded in 1962, with the opening of the first Walmart discount store in Rogers, Ark. The company incorporated as Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., on Oct. 31, 1969. The company's shares began trading on OTC markets in 1970 and were listed on the New York Stock Exchange two years later. The company is the world's 18th largest public corporation, according to the Forbes Global 2000 list, and the largest public corporation when ranked by revenue. With fiscal year 2011 sales of $419 billion, Walmart is the biggest private employer in the world with over 2 million employees, and is the largest retailer in the world.
