The 30 Year Treasury Inflation-Index Security Rate the interest rate for investing in a government issued treasury inflation-protected security that has a maturity of 30 years. The principal of a TIPS increases with inflation and decreases with deflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index. TIPS behave differently than normal treasuries in the market. As expectations of future inflation increase, TIPS become more attractive relative to normal treasuries, while when expectations of future inflation decrease TIPS become less attractive.
