The USC Rossier School of Education Opens Applications for a New Online Master of Education in School Counseling

LOS ANGELES and LANHAM, Md., Sept. 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- USC Rossier School of Education is now accepting applications for its new online Master of Education (ME) in School Counseling. The program will prepare aspiring school counselors to address unique challenges affecting 21st century schools, focusing on student wellbeing through social, emotional and academic needs.

The ME in School Counseling will explore three key areas of focus including trauma-informed practices, restorative justice and college and career readiness. The new program's curriculum mirrors USC Rossier's on campus offerings and will feature inquiry-based learning and hands-on classroom experience. Coursework will be based on standards set by the American School Counselor Association's National Model for School Counseling, as well critical research from counseling, community psychology, sociology, philosophy and education fields.

The new program joins a suite of online graduate degree programs offered by the top-ranked USC Rossier School of Education that are powered by 2U, Inc., including a Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Arts in Teaching-TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Doctor of Education in Organizational Change and Leadership. The partnership has since produced more than 3,800 highly prepared educators across the globe, the majority of whom are serving hard-to-staff schools.

"The 21st century learning environment presents unique challenges for both students and educators, and research shows that qualified school counselors have a significant effect on student success and achievement," said Karen Symms Gallagher, dean of the USC Rossier School of Education. "We're pleased to offer a top-tier graduate experience for aspiring school counselors across the globe. This new addition to USC Rossier's online offerings furthers our mission to improve learning in urban education as we help K-12 learners overcome life's challenges in the classroom and beyond."

The new program consists of 49 credit hours that can be completed in as little as two years. Courses are taught by USC Rossier faculty with live weekly sessions and interactive course content powered by 2U's online campus. Students will also gain hands-on experience through extensive fieldwork in K-12 school settings in their local communities. Once completed, students will be qualified to pursue licensure as a school counselor in the state of California.

The final application deadline is March 23, 2018, and the first cohort of students will begin classes in May 2018. For more information, visit rossieronline.usc.edu or contact an admissions counselor at 888-628-1872.
