TEPCO and Landis+Gyr Sign Agreement to Explore Future Options for Leveraging IoT Network

With 13.5 million endpoints installed and an average of 500,000 new devices added each month, TEPCO's AMI roll-out of 28 million meters and devices - the world's largest project of this kind - will be deployed three years ahead of the original plan. Based on the high satisfaction with over 600 million daily reads, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and Landis+Gyr now have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly explore the full Internet of Things (IoT) potential of Landis+Gyr's state-of-the-art AMI technology.

TOKYO and ALPHARETTA, Ga. and ZUG, Switzerland, Sept. 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Landis+Gyr (LAND.SW) and TEPCO have signed an agreement to explore future projects utilizing the Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities of Landis+Gyr's intelligent grid network. The Memorandum of Understanding supports TEPCO's goals for delivering consumer services that promote energy efficiency and establishing a new energy business model.

The Memorandum also signals a commitment from both parties to cooperate in building an IoT strategy that goes far beyond advanced metering applications to develop other ways for TECPO to monetize their technology investments and open new revenue streams.

"The TEPCO deployment is using the most innovative methods and technology to not only modernize grid operations, but also implement far-reaching IoT applications," said Prasanna Venkatesan, Executive Vice President Americas and Japan for Landis+Gyr. "This provides the backbone for TEPCO to revolutionize the way energy services are provided and assist their goals for enabling a smart community."

TEPCO's ongoing advanced metering project – the world's largest intelligent grid deployment – is nearing the halfway mark. As of the end of August, 13.5 million endpoints have been deployed under Landis+Gyr's Gridstream® AMI solution, a standards-based IoT utility network for communicating with advanced meters, distribution equipment and intelligent devices across the system.

The deployment is now scheduled to be completed by 2020, a three-year acceleration of the initial 10-year plan. Currently TEPCO averages over 500,00 advanced meters installed each month, far and away the fastest AMI deployment in history.
