Chile is one of South America's most stable and prosperous nations, leading in human development, competitiveness, income per capita and economic freedom although it has high economic inequality. Chile has a nominal GDP of $248 billion according to 2011 estimates, putting it at 39th in the world. In 2010, it became the first South American country to join the OECD and it is also a member of the WTO and APEC.
