Downside Deviation

View Financial Glossary Index

Downside deviation measures the standard deviation of the downward movements of an investment.

This alternate risk metric was created in lieu of the thinking that investors should be more concerned with the negative deviation of investment returns.

Downside Deviation = (Standard Deviation of negative Monthly Total Returns) / (the specified lookback period)
