The Case Shiller Indices are a group of multiple indices: A national price index, a 20-city composite index, a 10-city composite index, and twenty individual metro area indices.
Case-Shiller is frequently reported as the national price index in media, however, using the individual metro areas can demonstrate if regions are showing price increases while others are facing price declines. For instance, during the 2008 Recession, New York's housing prices showed slight declines, while areas such as Las Vegas and Tampa had heavy price declines. (See the link on the full definition).
YCharts includes both the Home Price Index (HPI) and Aggregate Tiered Index. They differ because the Aggregate Tiered breaks markets into three different tiers (low, middle and high) and aggregates the three.
