Alleghany Corp. is engaged, through Alleghany Insurance Holdings LLC and its subsidiaries, primarily in the property and casualty and surety insurance business. It owns and manages properties in the Sacramento, California region through its subsidiary Alleghany Properties and seeks out strategic investments. The company primarily through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Alleghany Capital Partners, manages public equity investments, including those held by its insurance operating units, as well as conducts equity investment and non-insurance acquisition research. Alleghany Corporation is originally created by the railroad entrepreneurs Oris Paxton Van Sweringen and Mantis James Van Sweringen as a holding company for their railroad interests. It was incorporated in 1929 and reincorporated in Delaware in 1984. It is headquartered in New York, New York.
