Banco Santander, S.A. (Santander), is the Parent bank of Grupo Santander. Santander is a financial group operating principally in Spain, the United Kingdom, Portugal, other European countries, Brazil and other Latin American countries and the United States, offering a range of financial products. It operates in four segments: Continental Europe, United Kingdom, Latin America and Sovereign. It is the fourth largest bank in the world by profits and eighth by stock market capitalisation. In 2009, its net ordinary profits were over EUR 8.9 billion, 1% more than the previous year, and it distributed more than EUR 4.9 billion in dividends to shareholders. The company was formerly known as Banco Santander Central Hispano S.A. and changed its name to Banco Santander, S.A. in June 2007. Banco Santander, S.A. was founded in 1857 and is based in Madrid, Spain.
