Plains Exploration & Production Co. is an independent energy company, that is engaged in the activities of acquiring, developing, exploring and producing oil and gas properties. It owns oil and gas properties in onshore and offshore California, the Gulf Coast Region, including Haynesville Shale, Eagle Ford Shale and South and East Texas, the Mid-Continent Region and the Rocky Mountains. A spin-off from Plains Resources, Inc., the company was founded in 2002. Its operations, as of 2009, were all in North America, including California, Texas, Louisiana, Wyoming, and offshore of California and in the Gulf of Mexico. The company is headquartered in Houston, Texas.
