About Operating Earnings Yield
Click the "Learn More" link below to see how we calculate operating earnings yield.
The operating earnings yield is annualized operating income as a percentage of the total value of the company's common stock.
It is similar to earnings yield in that it tells you how many dollars of earnings you are receiving for each dollar paid to purchase the stock. However, some investors consider it a better indicator of future earning power than earnings yield since the earnings number excludes tax effects, non-operating income and expenses, discontinued operations, extraordinary items, preferred stock dividends and accounting change differences.

I know refining is no good, but still how does $PTR's net fall in a year when oil prices were so high on average.

Not surprised to see $PTR down on refining losses today. Hard enough to make money on free-traded oil, impossible when govt controls prices.
