Toys or Trash For a 3.8% Dividend Yield: Mattel vs. Waste Management
What’s more certain – that your kid will demand some junkie-but-expensive toy, or that he or she will toss the thing aside weeks later? Either way, the profits at Mattel (MAT) and Waste Management (WM) are stoked, the toy maker’s results bouncing around seasonally and the trash hauler’s steadier. Each pays a nice dividend, well-covered by earnings, with the yield currently at about 3.8%. Neither stock is cheap: Mattel’s PE is about 15; Waste Management’s PE is about 17. Dividends are a nice way to create some income these days, but all us yield junkies need to remember that we’re also buying the underlying stock.
