It’s 2:00 a.m. and Closing Time – Who’s Left to Go Home With? Groupon and Nokia Hook Up
Groupon (GRPN) and Nokia (NOK) are teaming up. According to Nokia’s website, it will integrate Groupon’s hyperlocal Groupon Now deals into the mapping software on its newest smartphones. So when all's done, if you’re on a Lumia and use Nokia Maps to look up a local restaurant, you’ll also see a bunch of places running deals.
Neither company is necessarily the ideal partner, and less-than-ideal partners often have to settle for each other.
Groupon lost money last quarter and is still trying to prove out its business model. Meanwhile Nokia’s partnership last year with Microsoft (MSFT) turned into a bust. It has slashed prices on the Lumia 900 smartphone, which won’t be eligible for a Windows upgrade later this year.
But it's nice to see two unpopular kids making friends. Maybe they could partner next with Facebook (FB), which is already working with Zynga (ZNGA). Or maybe Zynga could team up with Research in Motion (RIMM). Better yet, let’s throw them all in a room together and see what they come up with.
